On this tour, Sardinha goes on a pilgrimage to Fátima, a city in central Portugal, 130 km from Lisbon, and one of the most important places of worship for Catholics, with about 5 million visitors every year.
After visiting the Sanctuary of Fátima, of which the Chapel of the Apparitions, where Our Lady appeared to the three shepherds in 1917, is a part, we swam to Batalha to visit its imposing Gothic-style monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A visit to Batalha is optional, the Sardine can take you immediately, from Fátima, to Nazaré for a lunch of very fresh fish and seafood. This fishing village was one of the first points of international tourist interest in Portugal during the last century. It is currently known worldwide for its giant waves and surf records.
Watching the waves from the Site of Nazaré, also a place of ancient religious worship, is an overwhelming spectacle, not to be missed.
Finally, we arrived at Óbidos, a romantic medieval town famous for its winding streets, whitewashed houses covered with flowers, vases and tiles — all within the walls of a magnificent 12th century castle.
